re:Generations
“From Generation to Generation”
by Jessica Stollings Strang
I was a 22-year-old college graduate, bright-eyed and ready to conquer the world. My life plan was set, at least in my mind. I would attend graduate school, decorate a fancy apartment, meet Mr. Right and get married, land a job as a nationally syndicated news reporter, and eventually have kids. It sounded so glamorous.
If only my expectations matched my realities.
I went to graduate school, and quickly learned that the program was not right for me. I lived alone in a mildly furnished apartment, ate a lot of soup, and spent every penny of my speaking income on bills and bridesmaid dresses for other people’s weddings.
Confusing life questions emerged. “Where do I go from here? Have I taken a wrong turn? Is this all there is to life?” I searched for ministries, church groups, and books that would speak to my life stage, but I didn’t find much.
What I did learn is that my generation—called the Millennials—is getting married much later in life than previous generations. As a result, a new demographic—the 20-somethings—has emerged and they are struggling to find a “fit” in life.
In large part, 20-somethings are missing from churches and ministries at a time when we need them the most. I started re:Generations to raise awareness of this ministry void, and to help churches, ministries and organizations understand and connect with the rising generation of leaders.
My journey with re:Generations has been a fun one. It’s enabled me to travel the country and meet wonderful people who are doing great things for Christ. It’s also given me a platform to share my passion: increasing understanding, awareness and appreciation for each generation so we can all work better together and ensure the “I AM” is remembered from generation to generation. (Exodus 3:14-15)
